>From tjt Wed Apr 1 21:11 EST 1987 remote from glimmer Status: RO I asked for patches, and here's what I got that hasn't already been posted to the net. I've been taking a break from synths to play guitar and bass in a couple of local bands, so I haven't even tried all of these yet, but the ones I have tried have been interesting (is there such a thing as a "bad" or "useless" patch? Not to *this* Eno desciple). I strongly encourage people to post patches/program settings for ANY piece of equipment to the net. Compared to the cruft that clogs up net.singles and mod.gaffa every day, one little SPX90 application isn't going to make anyone complain, and just might change my life the way "Mean Electric Guitar" listed below did. -Paul cut here ------------------------------------------------------------------------- >From seismo!mcvax!kvvax4!truls@EDDIE.MIT.EDU Tue Mar 31 13:37:26 1987 Date: Thu, 8 Jan 87 09:11:11 -0100 From: seismo!mcvax!kvvax4!truls@EDDIE.MIT.EDU (Truls Ellefsen) To: mit-athena!paul Subject: CZ-patches. CZ-101 patches on the net a few days ago, and I offer the following three in return. My favorite is the "Reverb Flute" from E&MM, while the other two are originals. "Guitar with distortion" really is an unplayable patch, but it has 'built-in' distortion, so may come in handy as a guide as to how to do this. The "Mean Electric Guitar" is a cross between a motor bike at 800000 rpm and a guitar - it needs work, but with the right outboard signal processors it could become a good heavy metal guitar (I've used it occasionally for such). By the way, do you know of any people with a TR-707 or Jx8p? I would like to trade patches, or sequences for them. Well, I just recently purchased a CZ-101, so I don't have much. I only have two. Now don't laugh when you see what they are; they were for a project I was doing for someone. Enclosed are two "bird call" patches. (I had used a DX-100 wind chime patch plus an old PAIA wind generator to make an environmental ambiance.) I would appreciate leads to other patches as well. If I develop any, I'll send you a copy, if you're interested. One other thing, before I move on to the patches themselves: I am a member of the Computers and Music Group of the Boston Computer Society. My mind went on a bit of a journey and thought about the possibility of collecting patches (beg, borrow and steal among everyone) and if there is an interest, to possibly bind them into a book. The whole idea, though is the free exchange of patches and programming hints and techniques. Do you have any comments? Are you interested? Please let me know if you get it.) Here are a couple of my patches. They're probably not the greatest in the world but they've been useful in various contexts. (I tend to use an SPX-90 *a lot*, so the sounds might loose translation w/out the effect.) Let me know what you think. In addition to your new patches, I'm still waiting on your previous batch of patches from some 4+ months ago. I thought I was on your mailing list for those (..at least you told me I was...). If I could get those too I'd appreciate it. To change the number of shots fired each time you push a key, change the rate of DCA 1, STEP 5. To vary the speed at which shots are fired, vary the vibrato rate (most effective if you do this while playing.) ------------------------------------------------------------------ Name: Glissando Filter Sweep line mod detune vibrato octave 1+1' off/off - 0 00 06 1 0 0 6 - 1 DCO 1 wave 8 0 rate level 99 33 70 0 END DCW 1 key 0 rate level 99 99 46 99 37 52 SUS 26 0 END DCA 1 key 0 rate level 99 50 77 99 67 91 SUS 79 59 33 0 END Comments: This sound creates a "high-to-low" filter sweep in discrete increments (hence, glissando) each time a key is pressed. The sweep is most noticable in the lower range of the keyboard. For really gothic song intros, try setting DETUNE OCTAVE to -1 and playing single notes going slowly >from high to low on the keyboard. (Notice that the parameter values of this sound are very similar to those of Space Shots. By tweaking the vibrato, DCO1, DCA1 it becomes a semi-musical sound.) ------------------------------------------------------------------ >From rutgers!liberty!swatsun!thebes!obrien@EDDIE.MIT.EDU Tue Mar 31 13:44:19 1987 Date: Mon, 2 Mar 87 14:23:58 EST From: rutgers!liberty!swatsun!thebes!obrien@EDDIE.MIT.EDU (Tom O'Brien) To: liberty!rutgers!mit-eddie!mit-athena!paul Paul: Here are some of my patches for your CZ exchange. I'd appreciate seeing as many patches as you're willing to send. ========= Name: Diva Harmonic An ethereal third harmonic fades in as the fundamental fades out. Play slowly & hold down the keys for several seconds for full effect. Reminiscent of some of the music in the film _Diva_.
